Oktoberfest at Prestige Ballroom
Autumn celebrations call for hearty food and drink… and in the case of Prestige Ballroom, it also calls for a fun, hearty night of dancing at our Oktoberfest! Students, guests and staff enjoyed an evening of European culture that included authentic costumes, scrumptious brats, refreshing beer and learning a lively peasant dance called the polka!
Polka originated in Czechoslovakia in the 1830’s as a fun, lively social dance. Historians believe it was invented by a peasant girl one Sunday simply for her amusement. She came up with a dance to fit a song translated to “Uncle Nimra Bought a White Horse”. Polka’s popularity spread throughout Europe and to the States. It lost its popularity in the early twentieth century when jazz became so popular, but made a comeback when Polish immigrants adopted it as their national dance. The Lawrence Welk show also increased the polka in popularity.
Prestige Ballroom had a great turn out for our Oktoberfest party and everyone had fun learning this quick, lively dance! Join us next October for a fun evening of brats, beer and that fun, lively dance called the polka!

Cha Cha, Rumba, and Waltz….OH MY!

Health Benefits of Ballroom Dancing
Not only is ballroom dancing fun, it is very beneficial for your mind and body! Ballroom dancing has many health benefits that people often do not think about. DanceScape.com listed some of the benefits of dancing as: it’s good exercise and burns a lot of calories; it helps prevent osteoporosis and arthritis; it helps increase endorphins, which helps the body relieve stress and decrease depression; and dance helps the body stay young “. Fact: The muscle exertion and breathing rates of dancers performing in one dance competition is equivalent to those of cyclists, swimmers and an Olympic- level 800-meter runner” (Dancescape.com editor, 1/18/15, dancescape.com).
There have also been studies that show that ballroom dancing can help prevent dementia. According to Richard Powers’ article Use It or Lose It: Dancing Makes You Smarter, a study by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine showed that “The only physical activity to offer protection against dementia was frequent dancing.” The study was a 21-year study that observed seniors that were a minimum of 75 years old.

WebMD quotes physical therapist Ross Brakeville as saying: “Depending on the style, you can improve your heart health, joint mobility, strength, balance/coordination, and an overall sense of well-being, making dance good for most everyone” (Jodi Helmer, 2014). Jodi Helmer also discusses how dancing benefits the heart. The longer you dance, the more your heart is having to work, which increases your heart rate and helps improve the health of your heart.
Ballroom dancing is all around a beneficial and fun way to stay in shape. Your body is getting the physical activity it needs to keep you healthy, and whether you are dancing with a significant other or not, it is a fun social atmosphere for everybody.

Your Oasis of Fun Outside of Work
We loved hosting Business After Hours through the Kirkwood Des Peres Chamber of Commerce last week! The evening began after work on Thursday, August 27th. As guests from three different St. Louis Chambers of Commerce, BNI Business BOOM and the greater St. Louis area arrived, they were invited to enter three different drawings to be eligible to win amazing ballroom dance prizes.
As attendees began mingling and touring Prestige Ballroom Dancing, they found their way over to our wonderful food and beverage caterers. Jon from Liquid Spirits supplied amazing beverages that were an absolute hit with all of our attendees. Our guests also enjoyed new menu items like chips, dip and lemonade courtesy of Susanne at Oberweis. Finally, for dessert, Destination Desserts generously donated gooey butter cake, cookies and cupcakes. YUM!
After fellow business personnel had enjoyed their hors d’oueuvres and refreshments, the first prize drawing was held. Our lucky winner, (a guest from the West County Chamber of Commerce) received two CDs full of popular Ballroom Dance music. During the second drawing, (we added a surprise twist and…) four attendees each won an Introductory Ballroom Dance lesson. It was wonderful for us to see the excited looks on the winner’s faces as they learned more about the art of ballroom dancing! Last but certainly not least, our final drawing of the evening was for a Ballroom Dance Package complete with private lessons, group lessons and more! Our winner for the evening was a current State Farm Account Representative in Des Peres. In between each of the three prize drawings, our talented staff members demonstrated numerous dances ranging from a Beginner Level Rumba all the way through an elegant Bolero and stunning Cha Cha.
Thank you again to everyone who attended and made this event such a blast. If you or someone you know is interested in Ballroom Dancing, we have gift cards available in the amount of your choosing which can be purchased via our website or by calling 314-596-2188.

Wedding Couple of the Week: Dana & Alex
Pictured above: Dana and Alex following their final first dance rehearsal at Prestige Ballroom
Dana and Alex arrived at Prestige Ballroom in the beginning of June 2015. Since they had little over one month until their Wedding Day, they were paired with Instructor Erich, who has over 22 years of dance experience! To learn more about this sweet couple, Erich asked them to describe their ideal first dance routine. The future bride and groom said that their dream routine would be, “simple & fun”!
After learning more about the couple and their wedding details, Erich decided an elegant Foxxy routine would be the perfect fit. Dana & Alex brought their first dance routine to life by incorporating a stunning Promenade entrance amongst other technical moves! Did we mention that this duo learned their entire wedding routine in only six lessons*?! Great job guys! *(results typical) lol
“Sharon & Erich were insanely patient as they taught us, possibly the two most awkward humans, to “sway, sway” (It took the entire first lesson). We laughed with our instructors as we improved (and threw elbows and stepped on toes). We are so grateful for a new sense of confidence and grace. We are looking forward to ‘wow’-ing our friends and family with our first dance!” – Dana & Alex
Watch our behind the scenes interview with our Wedding Couple of the Week to learn more about their experience:
Dana & Alex tied the knot on July 25, 2015 at the Holiday Inn Eureka. They shared their first dance as husband and wife to, “Mean to Me” by Brett Eldridge. Congratulations and Best Wishes!
